Europe stands for unity, for common roots and individual forms of expression, for shared traditions and regional diversities. This year’s Cultural Days of the ECB, of which the ECB Annual Photography Award forms a part, were dedicated to Romania.
“Romania” is, therefore, the theme of the ECB Annual Photography Award 2009. The ECB invited photographers to present their vision of Romania today and asked Romanian experts in the field of photography to nominate photographic works dealing with that subject. The photographs submitted were assessed by an international jury of experts.
The ten photographic works shortlisted for the ECB Annual Photography Award are being presented for the first time to the public in an exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, Romania (29 January-28 February 2010; 3 Izvor St., 050563 Bucharest, Romania). We are confident that the photographs will foster the further understanding of contemporary Europe and – by adding a fresh perspective – raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Europe’s nations and peoples.
The European Central Bank should like to thank all the photographers participating in the competition, the jury, and everyone else involved in staging the exhibition and producing the related publications. Special thanks go to Banca Naţională a României (BNR), to the country nominators in Romania and their national project coordinator Mr Ştefan Tóth, as well as to Claudio Hils, the curator of the ECB Annual Photography Award.
